Forza Horizon 3 Preview
Forza Horizon is the offshoot of the classic sim-based car racer Forza Motorsport. It is pitched as the more arcade and fun version in the series and now releases every second year opposite to the Motorsport release. Forza Horizon 3 will be released on Xbox one and PC on the Tuesday, the 27th of September in all great retailers and digitally.
Let’s get straight to the big reason a lot of you may be looking to get into the series this year. Not only is it the largest open world map in the series history but that map is made up completely by Australian locations. Surfers Paradise will be the major urban environment in the game but travel down the road and you will be racing past the Twelve Apostles and if you keep driving you will end up at the breathtaking Byron Bay. Inland you will be driving through the Yarra Valley, the rainforest, the outback and even a dry reservoir. The environments will be full of all the iconic animals as well with kangaroos, lorikeets and crocodiles amongst the fauna you will be flying past.
Some of the features you will find in the newest version in the Horizon series includes 4 player online Co-op and 12 player online free roam mode. The Horizon festivals which are at the heart of the missions for the game will see you being the boss of these festivals and being able to create your own events with the new blueprint feature. You may like a course but think it would be better with buggies, then create it! Also you will be able to hire your friends to race at your festivals to gain more fans. If they are not getting the fans for you then get rid of them and go on the hunt for better players in the world. Also customisation is king in this game with everything from your avatar to your number plate being able to look the way you want it to.
One of the two biggest features in this game are the graphics Playground Games, the developer, are able to draw out of the Xbox One and especially the 4k support for PC. Remember with this game if you buy it on either PC or Xbox one it unlocks on the other platform with Microsoft’s play anywhere feature. Back to the graphics and the lengths that the team went to to capture the sky for this Australian setting. Team members lived in a campervan in the outback with special 12k cameras to capture the sky. This may seem like overkill but it really does polish off the game in an amazing way. The detail with the dust and other particle effects are another leap ahead for the franchise and really gives it the polish of the motorsport franchise in with the fun of the Horizon franchise.
The second major feature is the car list that Forza Horizon 3 features. 350 cars at launch with more to come in car packs in the future. The cars in Forza Horizon 3 are so diverse as well. The 2016 Ariel Nomad makes it in in the buggies along side the 2015 Ford Falcon XR8 as well as the iconic 2014 Ford FPV Limited Edition Pursuit Ute. The cover vehicles themselves demonstrate this best with the 2016 Lamborghini Centenario LP 770-4 taking pride of place in the center and the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor right above it flying through the sky. Other iconic Australian cars to make the list include the 1974 Holden Sandman HQ Panel Van, the 1951 Holden 50-2106 FX Ute and the 2014 HSV Limited Edition GEN-F GTS Maloo. The gameplay in Forza Horizon 3 is best described as fun. In Forza Horizon 3 you will race against other drivers but also things like Giant Zeppelins, speed boats, trains, helicopters and much more. Nothing in Forza Horizon 3 is made to frustrate the player and force them to be a better technical driver or push the right racing line. The game is designed to let you express yourself and the driver you want to be. Being a Co-op drop in drop out game also means you and your friends can express yourselves together very easily. If you have every wanted to drive a lamborghini on the beach through the saltwater or a 2 seat buggy down the streets of Surfers Paradise then this is really the game for you.
So everything I have seen so far leading up to the release of Forza Horizon 3 really has me excited for this game. As always do your research on the game before you pre-order and to aid on this there is countless gameplay videos on Youtube from all the expos that have been on lately. If you like racing games you should love this but if you’re not a racing fan this may still be for you. I will be streaming it at launch and we will have a review up not long after launch so keep it locked here if you are still not sure at launch. As for me the 27th of September cannot come quick enough!
