Berserk Musou (ベルセルク無双)
The critically acclaimed manga is finally getting another game! The upcoming Berserk title is being developed by Omega Force, who are well known for their ‘Warriors’ games, which include the Dynasty Warriors franchise and the popular One Piece: Pirate Warriors series.
There isn’t much known about the title yet as the trailer below is all we have in terms of any gameplay footage. But it looks like Omega are doing what they do best, albeit with a darker tone. Speaking at E3 in 2016, development lead Koinuma Hisashi stated that the game with cover the Golden Era and the Black Swordsman arcs from the manga, as well include footage from the 2012 film. He also said that he was pleased with the response to the teaser trailer but was fearful that the erotic content would hamper the games success in western countries. As a big fan of the Berserk manga, I wholeheartedly hope they lean into what makes the manga so memorable and double down in the areas they feel might alienate western cultures.
The game is being released on PS4, PS Vita and Steam, but with no release date in sight, all we can do is hope we get to play this game sooner, rather than later.
A Brief History of Berserk
For the uninitiated, Berserk is an incredibly good, incredibly violent, dark fantasy manga that was originally published in the late 80’s by Kentaro Miura. Focusing on the question of whether humanity is inherently good or evil, the series uses gratuitous violence, demons and sex to portray some of the most twisted shit imaginable. Despite Berserk’s penchant for gore and rape, the series is not without its maturity. Tackling themes of isolation, friendship and love, in rather incredible ways. The manga is ongoing and recently began releasing monthly content again.
Berserk follows the story of a man named Guts, (ガッツ Gattsu) a mercenary for hire who joins up with a team of mercenaries calling themselves the “Band of the Hawk”. It is here that Guts meets Griffith, the series main antagonist. Once these two are introduced, all hell breaks loose and I mean that quite literally. Griffith ends up becoming, more or less, the antichrist, and completely fucking up Gut’s day. While Guts is charged with the task of fending off the hordes of demons that begin to invade everyday existence.
The Berserk series really is a classic. Intelligent writing, deep philosophical themes and a fucking spectacular art style to boot. If you haven’t had a chance to read this phenomenal series, I highly recommend finding the time to do so. It is readable online for free by clicking here, but if you like what you read, then support the creator by collecting the amazing Manga, published through Dark Horse Comics.
