I love cosplay, it lets ordinary people become extraordinary characters. When it came to the extraordinary, the 2016 Gold Coast Supanova did not disappoint. What I can only imagine to be hundreds if not thousands of man hours being spent creating some of the most jaw-dropping, mind-shattering costumes, just to become their favourite hero, heroine, villain or villainess for a few hours.
It would seem as if the cosplay flavours of the month are Harley Quin, Deadpool and Kylo Ren. There were plenty of these popular characters to be found walking around the isles, browsing at comics or looking at a few choice collectibles. However for every 10 Quins, there was a Dobby, and for every 5 Deadpools, there was a Alan Parish, who enjoyed delighting crowds by running around with a game of Jumanji screaming “WHAT YEAR IS IT?!”
One of the standouts for me was the female Saitama, who even shaved her head to really get into character. The yellows on the costume made the entire room pop and the outfit really was a pleasure to see.
Seeing each character walking around, enjoying everyone else’s efforts was incredible to witness. It even got my partner and myself keen to try some of our own cosplay at the next Supanova. However without any further adieu, I present to you the cosplayers of the 2016 Gold Coast Supanova. A massive congratulations, and a heartfelt thankyou, to you all.
